Requirements
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with root or sudo access.
- Recommended baseline: at least 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM.
- A reachable public IPv4 address; IPv6 is optional.
- A DNS name for HTTPS, pointing to the VM.
- TCP 80 and 443 reachable for the documented Let’s Encrypt setup.
Prepare DNS
Create an A record for the looking glass hostname. Add an AAAA record only when IPv6 is configured and reachable. The following name is an example:
getent ahosts lg.example.netUse a clean VM for first deployment. Review the installer and package before executing it with elevated privileges.
Download And Install
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y wget unzip
wget https://herza.id/routeglass/routeglass-v1.4.3-open-source-release.zip
unzip routeglass-v1.4.3-open-source-release.zip
cd routeglass-v1.4.3-open-source-release
chmod +x installer/install.sh
sudo ./installer/install.shEnter your company name, ASN, POP/location, optional test addresses and public hostname. A successful run ends with RouteGlass installation completed successfully.
Select Optional Features
- Rate limiting: separate request limits for normal web traffic and diagnostic/BGP operations.
- Test files: sizes entered as numbers separated by spaces, such as
100 500 1000. - BGP: choose exactly one router backend, or leave disabled.
- Let’s Encrypt: enable after DNS and port 80 reachability are ready.
Verify The Installation
systemctl status routeglass --no-pager
systemctl status nginx --no-pager
curl -sS http://127.0.0.1:8080/
curl -I https://lg.example.netReplace the example hostname. Confirm certificate verification succeeds; do not use a certificate-bypass flag as a production acceptance test. Keep the application backend bound to localhost.
